Detailed below
are the most common childcare qualifications. A sole
charge nanny would normally hold a DCE or NNEB, NVQ Level 3 or
BTEC National Diploma.
CACHE (Council for Award in Childcare
and Education)
Previously NNEB (National Nursery Examination Board)
Diploma in Childcare and Education (DCE)
This is a two year full time course covering the ages 0-7. It is
probably the most recognised qualification and gives students hands
on experience as well as academic study covering the educational,
physical, intellectual, social and emotional needs of the different
ages. Other areas covered include health and hygiene, first aid and
learning how to interact with parents and other professionals in
childcare.
Certificate in Childcare and Education (CCE)
This is a practical one year course, combining both college and
supervised training in a variety of placements. A candidate holding
this is qualified to begin a career in childcare, either in a nursery or
as a mother's help.
Foundation Award in Caring for Children
This is a year long course which includes both practical and theory
childcare issues and incorporates a personal investigation into child
development. It is generally considered a good basis for further
training.
ADCE (Advanced Diploma in Childcare Education)
This is an advanced course only open to experienced childcarers.
It covers dealing with special educational needs and with appraisal
and training methods of childcare and education. People who have
an ADCE diploma are qualified to do almost any job in childcare.
NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications)
NVQ courses can take up to 2 years to complete and are assessed
within the workplace to demonstrate competence and capability.
Level 2:
Assessed in a range of competencies dealing with children's
physical, emotional and social development. Qualified to begin a
career in childcare, either in a nursery or as a mother's help.
Level 3:
Assessed across 15 units including the ability to work and care
for children without supervision and management and support
for parents and family. Largely equivalent to a DCE. Qualified to
work as a nanny but some parental involvement and guidance
is recommended for newly qualified girls.
Level 4:
Assessed for the ability to run and develop a play area and
supervise other staff. Qualified for all types of childcare careers.
BTEC (Business and Technology Education
Council)
Covers the same material as the DCE but considered more
academic.
Higher National Diploma
Full time 2 year course, equivalent to the first year of a degree.
Childcare practice and development courses including human
growth and learning activities. Practical community assignments
are also part of the curriculum.
National Certificate
Practical, work related part time course, equivalent to 3 A’levels.
Private Colleges
Private colleges offering specialist training include the Norland
College, The Princess Christian College and The Chiltern Nursery
Training College. The courses are two years and are generally
followed by a probation period of 6-9 months. Wide range of
subjects covered and the students receive an NNEB and a health
diploma.
